Driver’s Ed Electrical Safety Program – FAQs
How long is the presentation?
We can modify the program to fit your available classroom time. Whether you have a short class period or more time for discussion and scenarios, we can adjust the presentation accordingly.
Who is the program designed for?
The program is designed for high school Driver’s Education students and focuses on electrical hazards new drivers could realistically encounter.
What will students learn?
Students will learn what to do in situations such as hitting a utility pole, encountering a downed power line, seeing wires on or near a vehicle, and coming across electrical equipment damaged in a crash or storm.
What should I do if my vehicle hits a utility pole and a power line falls on it?
This is one of the main scenarios we cover! Students learn why they should normally stay inside the vehicle, call 911, warn others to stay away, and wait for utility personnel to confirm the area is safe.
Do students learn how to safely exit a vehicle if there is a fire?
Yes. We explain what to do in the rare situation when someone must leave a vehicle near a downed power line because of an immediate danger such as fire, including how to exit without simultaneously touching the vehicle and ground and how to move away safely.
Is the program specific to Tri-County Electric Cooperative?
The safety information applies anywhere students may encounter power lines or electrical equipment. We also help students understand the role of the electric cooperative and why utility crews must make the scene electrically safe.
Do we need any special equipment or setup?
We can keep setup simple and work with what is available in your classroom. Let us know what technology or space you have when scheduling.
How much does the program cost?
There is no charge for schools in Tri-County Electric Cooperative’s service area.
Can you present to more than one class?
Yes. We can work with the school to determine the best schedule for reaching multiple Driver’s Ed classes.
How far in advance should we schedule?
Advance notice is appreciated so we can coordinate with our staff, but contact us with the dates you have available, and we’ll see what we can accommodate.
Can the presentation be customized for our class?
Absolutely. Class length, group size, and classroom needs can vary, so we can tailor the program to fit your students and the amount of time you have available.
